The Los Angeles Rams selected University of California quarterback Jared Goff with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft on Thursday night in Chicago.

The Rams hope Goff will become the franchise’s long-term answer at quarterback, which has been a major weakness for the team in recent seasons because of injuries and subpar performances.

Goff threw for 4,719 yards and 43 touchdowns with 13 interceptions as a junior during the 2015 season. He led the Golden Bears to an 8-5 record and a win in the Armed Forces Bowl.

The Rams’ next pick, barring trades, is 110th overall (fourth round). L.A. acquired the No. 1 pick two weeks ago, shipping two second-round selections (Nos. 43 and 45 overall) and a third-round choice (No. 76) in this year’s draft, as well as two picks in next year’s draft, to the Tennessee Titans.
