Perhaps the Denver Broncos will throw up a Hail Mary.
Two sources connected to the Broncos told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Denver head coach Gary Kubiak has spoken with free-agent quarterback Johnny Manziel as a potential fit for the roster down the line.
This doesn’t necessarily mean Manziel will sign with Denver anytime soon, as the sources told Schefter that the Broncos want to see how the beleaguered quarterback’s pending legal issues and potential NFL discipline are resolved before making any move.
Mike Klis of KUSA-TV also threw cold water on the possibility of a Manziel-Broncos marriage, with ProFootballTalk confirming soon after that Denver has no plans to sign the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner. The Broncos haven’t even discussed the idea, according to PFT.
All told, the Broncos desperately need a quarterback with Peyton Manning retiring and Brock Osweiler signing with the Houston Texans in free agency this offseason. There have been some rumblings about Denver potentially trading for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, but a deal hasn’t been completed because the Broncos reportedly want him to take a sizable pay cut.
The Broncos acquired Mark Sanchez from the Philadelphia Eagles last month, giving Kubiak and Co. at least one quarterback who has started an NFL game. The only other quarterback on Denver’s roster, Trevor Siemian, hasn’t thrown a single pass in the NFL since being drafted in the seventh round of last year’s draft.
The Browns released Manziel, whose off-field antics have overshadowed his on-field production since he was drafted in the first round in 2014, earlier this offseason. The 23-year-old had an illustrious college career at Texas A&M but has been nothing short of a headache since entering the NFL.
