Andrew Shaw will pay for his actions.
The NHL announced Wednesday that Shaw has been suspended one game for using a homophobic slur Tuesday night during Game 4 of the Chicago Blackhawks’ first-round Stanley Cup playoff series with the St. Louis Blues. The Blackhawks forward also has been fined $5,000 for directing an inappropriate gesture toward on-ice officials and will be required to undergo sensitivity training.
“While Mr. Shaw was apologetic and remorseful for both the offensive comments and the inappropriate gesture directed at the on-ice officials, he must be held accountable for his actions,” Colin Campbell, the NHL’s senior executive vice president of hockey operations, said in a statement. “The emotion of the moment cannot and will not be a mitigating factor for the conduct that is expected of an NHL player.”
Shaw will miss Thursday night’s Game 5, which will take place at St. Louis’ Scottrade Center. The Blues currently lead the best-of-seven series three games to one.
