Conor McGregor witnessed firsthand the worst-case scenario — and very real danger — that exists in the world of mixed martial arts.

McGregor revealed in a poignant Facebook post Tuesday that he sat ringside Saturday night as his teammate, Charlie Ward, defeated Joao Carvalho in the third round of a Total Extreme Fighting match that turned fatal.

Carvalho, who fell ill about 20 minutes after the fight, later underwent emergency brain surgery but died Monday night from injuries he suffered in the bout.

The terrible news is a reminder of the risks that come with combat sports. Carvalho, a native of Portugal, was just 28 years old at the time of his death.
