Curt Schilling: ESPN Has 'Some Of The Biggest Racists' In Sports Media

Curt Schilling is fighting fire with fire.

ESPN fired Schilling last week one day after the former major league pitcher shared an anti-transgender meme on his Facebook page, furthering his reputation as a controversial voice on social media. Schilling, who’s always been outspoken, isn’t backing down on the unemployment line. Instead, he’s using his dismissal as an opportunity to open up about his former employer.

“Some of the most racist things I’ve ever heard have come out of people that are on the air at ESPN,” Schilling said Wednesday during an appearance on SiriusXM Satellite Radio’s “Breitbart News Patriot Forum,” according to Newsday. “They’re some of the biggest racists in sports commentating.”

Schilling, who had worked at ESPN since 2010, landed in hot water several times during his tenure with the network, as some found his political views to be over the top. The six-time MLB All-Star felt he was held to a different standard than some of his colleagues, though.

“The memo that was sent out more than once was about they wanted on-air talent to focus on sports,” explained Schilling, who, according to Newsday, was asked to clarify his remarks after Wednesday’s hour-long show was recorded in front of a live audience. “To me that means focus on sports unless you want to talk about something that is part of the liberal agenda.

“You listen to Stephen A. Smith, and Stephen A. Smith was the guy who said that Robert Griffin didn’t play quarterback for the Redskins because he’s black. No, Robert Griffin didn’t play quarterback for the Redskins because he sucked.

” … Tony Kornheiser compared the Tea Party to ISIS. I don’t know any planet where those are sports topics. But I don’t care. It’s OK. I think those conversations need to happen. But as soon as you go to the flip side, the right side, there are repercussions for not talking about sports.”

Schilling revealed Thursday during a radio interview with WEEI that he’s already received “a couple” of national offers and that he expects to have something finalized within the next couple of weeks.

In other words, like it or not, Schilling is going to keep fighting the fight. Stay tuned.
