Scott Chandler’s final game in the NFL may have come with the New England Patriots.

The veteran tight end, who was released by the Patriots on March 2, underwent surgery on his left knee earlier this week. Two days later, Chandler’s wife posted a message on Twitter that indicates her husband’s playing days probably are over.

Her tweet captures a message that Chandler posted on his Facebook page, which reads, in part, “Another knee surgery yesterday. This game gives and takes. This surgery will take me out of next season, and probably keep me from playing again.”

Chandler expressed thanks and gratitude for his family and friends and also thanked “everyone who has supported me and cheered me on the field over the years.”

Chandler signed a two-year contract with New England last offseason and was expected to be part of a solid tight end duo alongside All-Pro Rob Gronkowski. But the 30-year-old had an underwhelming campaign in 2015, catching just 23 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns in 15 games.

The Iowa product spent four-plus seasons with the Buffalo Bills prior to joining the Patriots, recording 38 or more receptions in each of his four full seasons and snagging 17 touchdown passes.

If Chandler’s career indeed is over, he’ll finish with an average of 11.6 yards per catch on 205 receptions for 2,379 yards to go along with 21 touchdowns.
