Greg Hardy’s lack of self-awareness is nothing new.
It’s been magnified this week since his 1-on-1 interview with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, in which Hardy denied ever putting his hands on a woman despite evidence to the contrary. But the defensive end has made several comments over the years that have left fans and pundits scratching their heads.
Take last October, for instance. Hardy, who was accused of throwing his ex-girlfriend onto a futon with guns, declared he was ready to come out “guns blazing” for the Dallas Cowboys in his return from a four-game suspension related to his domestic violence case. He also said ahead of his return, which came Week 5 against the New England Patriots, that he was looking forward to playing Tom Brady and that he hoped the quarterback’s wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, would be in attendance.
Hardy was asked Monday in his interview with Schefter about the odd media session, which generated plenty of internet buzz at the time, and the free-agent D-lineman explained himself. Kind of.
“I put myself in a situation where I can be attacked. In my head, I’m an entertainer. I don’t do interviews, so I do the interviews and I try to be entertaining, and I don’t remember my situation while I’m being an entertainer,” Hardy said. “It’s a line that, as ‘The Kraken,’ in five years, it’s definitely ingrained, and you know where the line is officially. Two years out, coming back, I couldn’t see that line.
“Being a (Dallas) Cowboy, thinking about cowboys, guns blazing trying to entertain and just make the fans laugh and smile. I got caught up in a situation, and Tom Brady’s wife had nothing to do with the situation. She’s pretty. She’s Gisele. She’s famous. Hope she comes, hope everybody comes, is what I said at the end, just to watch me play. It’s a result of me putting myself in a bad situation again.”
Hardy clearly has a knack for putting himself in bad situations. It’s perhaps why he’s unemployed and again at the center of controversy.
