FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots made a somewhat surprising move in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft by selecting North Carolina State quarterback Jacoby Brissett with the 91st overall pick.

Brissett is looking forward to learning on and off the field from the greatest coach-quarterback duo in NFL history.

“It’s an awesome experience,” Brissett said Friday night during a media confernce call. “You got one of the greatest coaches of all time in Bill Belichick. You got Josh McDaniels, who’s a really good coach, and you got Tom Brady, who you can learn from in every aspect of your life. I’m just excited to be a sponge in the room and get around those guys and learn from them.”

One of the areas Brissett focused on quite a bit with the Wolfpack was studying film. It’s something N.C. State teammate and offensive lineman Joe Thuney, who New England also selected in the third round, takes seriously as well.

“As a quarterback, trying to be the best player on the field, make sure to leave no stone unturned. Just constant hours of film and trying to find ways to win games,” Brissett said. “Thuney is the same way. He’s a student of the game. He loves football. It’s crazy me and him are playing on the same team again, and I can’t wait to start learning.”

Brissett also was able to learn from former Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, which could help the QB him make a smoother transition to New England’s offense. They spent some time together at Florida before Brissett transferred to N.C. State and before Weis left to join the Kansas City Chiefs in 2011.

“I think it was tremendous. … It kind of gave me a familiarity with some of the stuff (the Patriots do now),” Brissett said. “When I went up there on my visit, I think he was instrumental to my learning curve in college, and I definitely carried with me some of the things he instilled in me at Florida.”
