John Farrell Receives Vote Of Confidence From Red Sox's Dave Dombrowski

John Farrell has his boss’ support.

Even though Farrell has been scrutinized for some of his decisions this season, the Boston Red Sox entered Thursday’s play with a 12-9 record and in the midst of a four-game winning streak. Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is happy with the job his manager has done thus far.

“I think that John Farrell has done a fine job for us,” Dombrowski said Wednesday on WEEI’s “Ordway, Merloni and Fauria” before Boston defeated the Atlanta Braves 9-4. “I think he is a good manager. I think people that spend time micromanaging moves usually are the ones that are going to micromanage any manager’s moves.

“I think John Farrell has done a fine job managing this team,” Dombrowski added. “I think he has done a good job managing this team. I think he is a good manager, and we’re fortunate to have him.”

Farrell guided the Red Sox to a World Series title in his first season at the helm in 2013, but Boston entered this season having finished in last place for two consecutive years. The Sox have gone 149-175 since the beginning of 2014.

There was some question whether Dombrowski, who was hired last August, would bring back Farrell, especially with bench coach Torey Lovullo filling in admirably down the stretch last season as the skipper focused on treatment for his Stage 1 lymphoma. But Dombrowski showed faith. And so far, it has been rewarded, even if there have been a few head-scratching moments along the way.

“He has my support,” Dombrowski said. “He knows he has my support, and so I don’t really need to tell him that on a daily basis. We work together very well. I am happy he’s our manager.”
