John Gibbons wasn’t happy Tuesday night, and for good reason. What he said, however, has some people unhappy.
The Toronto Blue Jays manager expressed his displeasure after his team lost on a game-ending double play stemming from enforcement of Major League Baseball’s new slide rule. Replay officials ruled Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista didn’t slide directly into second base, leading to an automatic double play that ended the game.
Gibbon, as you’d expect, stormed out of the dugout to argue with crew chief Mike Everitt, though the manager obviously wasn’t going to like what he heard. Gibbons then sounded off in his postgame meeting with reporters.
“Maybe we’ll come out wearing dresses tomorrow,” Gibbons told reporters, per The Associated Press. “Maybe that’s what everybody’s looking for.”
Gibbons’ comments were quickly criticized for being sexist, and the Toronto skipper and the club tried to spin the comments Wednesday, saying he was joking.
