The New York Islanders are advancing in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but not without a little controversy.
The Islanders were trailing the Florida Panthers with under a minute remaining in Sunday’s Game 6 in the teams’ first-round Stanley Cup playoff series, when John Tavares forced overtime with this goal:
But it probably should have never happened, as the referees appeared to miss a tripping call just seconds before the game-tying tally.
Regardless, the goal counted, and the two teams played into a second overtime until Tavares sent the Panthers packing with a game-winning strike.
The Islanders won the series four games to two, and they will face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the next round.
