Dee Gordon has been suspended for 80 games, effective immediately, after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs, Major League Baseball announced early Friday.

The press release sent out by MLB says the Miami Marlins second baseman tested positive for exogenous Testosterone and Clostebol, which are both illegal under MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

“Dee Gordon is a very important part of our team and we all love him and support him,” Marlins president David Samson said, according to the Miami Herald. “That said I do not like or condone what he did. He is an important member of this organization and will be for many years to come. It is a huge, huge disappointment to the kids to our fans, to his teammates and to everyone in our organization who works hard every day to put a product on the field that all Miamians can be proud of.

Gordon is a two-time All-Star, last season’s National League batting champion and was batting .266 with 12 runs, five RBIs and six stolen bases this season after the Marlins beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 on Thursday. The 28-year-old signed a five-year, $50 million contract extension in the offseason.

Gordon also is the son of former pitcher Tom Gordon, who spent four seasons with the Boston Red Sox.
