The New England Patriots needed a third quarterback heading into the 2016 NFL Draft, and they selected one much earlier than expected.

The Patriots drafted North Carolina State quarterback Jacoby Brissett 91st overall in the third round Friday night. Brissett joins Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo on the Patriots’ quarterback depth chart.

Brissett, a Florida transfer, completed 237 of 395 passes in 2015 for 2,662 yards and 20 touchdowns with six interceptions. The 6-foot-4, 231-pound signal-caller ran the ball 139 times for 370 yards with six touchdowns as a senior.

Brissett ran a 4.94-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine and also posted a 7.17-second three-cone, 4.53-second short shuttle, 31-inch vertical leap and 9-foot, 5-inch broad jump.

Brady currently is suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season as NFL punishment for his alleged role in Deflategate. Garoppolo’s rookie contract runs out after the 2017 season, and he could be traded if he impresses in the first four games of 2016.
