BOSTON — With Joe Kelly on the disabled list, the Red Sox had to shuffle their roster Wednesday.

Kelly was placed on the 15-day DL after he exited Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bays Rays in the first inning with a right shoulder impingement. Noe Ramirez, who was sent down to Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday to make room for fellow reliever Heath Hembree, returned to Boston as a result.

The Red Sox also added pitcher William Cuevas to the active roster and designated left-hander Edwin Escobar for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said before Wednesday’s game against the Rays that Cuevas, who’s a starter in Pawtucket, will serve as a long reliever in the event something unforeseen happens to Wednesday’s starter, Rick Porcello. Cuevas is 1-1 with a 6.17 ERA in two outings with the PawSox.

Infielder Marco Hernandez was optioned to Pawtucket following Tuesday’s game in order to bring up Cuevas.
