Atletico Madrid would love to continue Bayern Munich’s habit of struggling in Spain under the brightest of lights.
The teams play each other Wednesday at Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semifinal series. Both sides are in fine form, having won 10, drawn one and lost one of their last 12 games, collectively.
Bayern Munich head coach Pep Guardiola is keen to secure European soccer’s biggest prize for the German power before he leaves for Manchester City. Bayern Munich lost in the semifinals in Guardiola’s first two seasons in charge — largely because of defeats suffered on the road against Spanish opponents in the first leg.
Atletico Madrid is playing the underdog’s role — something it has done to great effect under head coach Diego Simeone in recent seasons. Simeone’s team reached the final in 2014, but it might need to up its game in order to repeat the feat.
