Canada retained its title as king of the hockey world Sunday, beating a previously undefeated Finland squad in the gold medal game of the 2016 IIHF World Championship.
Boston Bruins winger Brad Marchand tallied one point in the 2-0 victory, assisting on Matt Duchene’s empty-net goal with less than a second remaining to help seal the deal for Team Canada. It was Canada’s second consecutive world title, becoming the first nation since Russia in 2008 and 2009 to repeat as champions.
Marchand, one of three Bruins players to compete in the 2016 Worlds, also was involved in a post-whistle scrap after a first-period scoring chance.
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Leo Komarov didn’t appreciate Marchand taking one final jab at the puck after Finland goalie Mikko Koskinen covered it up, and Komarov responded by putting the B’s winger in a headlock and wrestling him to the ice.
Team USA, which lost to Canada in the semifinals, had its doors blown off by by Russia in the bronze medal game, with Bruins winger Frank Vatrano scoring both U.S. goals in a 7-2 loss.
