Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes has been suspended through May 31 by Major League Baseball following an investigation into his Oct. 31 arrest on a domestic violence charge.
Reyes was placed on paid leave by MLB on Feb. 23 and hasn’t appeared in a game this season, meaning his suspension will amount to a 51-game ban. The 32-year-old doesn’t plan to appeal.
“Mr. Reyes cooperated fully with my office’s investigation,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement, according to ESPN.com. “Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Reyes violated the Policy and should be subject to discipline in the form of an unpaid suspension that will expire on May 31st. I am encouraged by Mr. Reyes’ commitment to the treatment provisions of the Policy in order to ensure that such an incident does not occur in the future.”
Reyes’ arrest stemmed from an incident in which he allegedly grabbed his wife by the throat and shoved her into a sliding glass door at their Hawaii hotel room following an argument. He was set to go to trial in April, but prosecutors dropped the case when his wife refused to talk to them about what happened that night.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Rockies approach the situation, as rookie shortstop Trevor Story started the season on an historic pace and enters Friday with 11 home runs, 27 RBIs and a .924 OPS in 33 games. Sources told ESPN’s Buster Olney that teams are interested in talking with Colorado about a potential trade for Reyes.
Reyes, a four-time All-Star, was traded to Colorado last season in a July deal that sent shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to the Toronto Blue Jays. He finished the year with a .274 average, seven home runs, 53 RBIs, 24 stolen bases and a .688 OPS in 116 games split between the destinations.
