Manchester United players’ reactions to Jose Mourinho’s appointment as manager depends on when they last kicked a ball for the Premier League club.

Manchester United appointed Mourinho on Friday, hoping the Portuguese tactician can resurrect the club’s winning tradition.

Present-day Red Devils have been silent on social and traditional media following Manchester United’s announcement. Perhaps it’s because Mourinho now controls their immediate futures, and some will be heading for the exit door or watching fresh competition for playing time walk through the entrance.

However, ex-Manchester United players have praised the club’s decision to hire Mourinho. Here’s a sampling from those who played under Sir Alex Ferguson — the legendary manager who retired in 2013 after 27 years at Manchester United.

Paul Scholes was a midfielder for Manchester United between 1992 and 2013. Peter Schmeichel played goalkeeper for the Red Devils between 1991 and 1999.

Phil Neville represented Manchester United’s first team between 1995 and 2005 as a midfielder and defender.

Ronny Johnsen played as a defender for Manchester United between 1996 and 2002.

Rio Ferdinand, who starred in defense for Manchester United between 2002 and 2014, now works as a pundit for British television network BT Sport. Ferdinand detailed the Mourinho-to-Manchester United story in a lengthy Facebook post.

Mourinho’s son, Jose Jr., never has played for Manchester United and probably never will. The younger Mourinho eschewed debate and analysis in favor of the cold, hard facts.
