David Ortiz Meets Maverick Schutte, Boy He Hit Home Run For, At Fenway

Just 12 days ago, 6-year-old Maverick Schutte arguably had the best day of his life.

Maverick, an avid Boston Red Sox fan, already has undergone around 30 surgeries and has another upcoming for his heart in a few weeks. But his friend, former Red Sox star Kevin Millar, got him in touch with ex-teammate David Ortiz, who in turn promised to hit a home run later that night against the New York Yankees.

Sure enough, Ortiz delivered, and the Red Sox won the game because of his blast. Maverick was overjoyed.

Then Wednesday happened.

Maverick had his dreams fulfilled when he traveled to Fenway Park to attend his first Red Sox game and meet his idol, Ortiz, who spent a bunch of quality time with the youngster before the game. Maverick also managed to get a foul ball early in the game, and Ortiz gave him a bat in the later innings.

Maverick even got to throw out the first pitch.

NESN’s Gary Striewski interviewed Maverick before the game on “Red Sox First Pitch.” Check that out in the embedded video above, as well as some of the best moments from the night below.
