Preakness Stakes 2016: Live Results, Analysis And Highlights From Pimlico Race Course

Good afternoon, and welcome in to NESN.com’s coverage of the 2016 Preakness Stakes.

7:12 p.m.: Here’s a full replay of the 141st Preakness Stakes.

7:10 p.m.: Nyquist and Cherry Wine officially finished 3 1/2 lengths behind Exaggerator, who previously had lost to Nyquist four times and came in second behind him twice.

7:05 p.m.: It’s hard to call Exaggerator a “surprise,” but after his start, it really was quite an impressive finish.

Here are the payouts for the Preakness (dollar figures via NBC broadcast).

Exaggerator: Win ($7.20), Place ($3.20), Show ($2.40)
Cherry Wine: Place ($9.80), Show ($4.20)
Nyquist: Show ($2.20)

6:55 p.m.: Exaggerator made quite a comeback after being 13 lengths behind. He wins the Preakness Stakes. Nyquist finishes third, and Cherry Wine takes second place. There will be no Triple Crown this year.

Unofficial time for Exaggerator: 1:58:31.

6:54 p.m.: Uncle Lino just took the lead!

6:53 p.m.: A very fast pace. Nyquist got off to a great start and leads the first quarter-mile.

6:52 p.m.: And they’re off!

6:51 p.m.: Lani is kicking in the gate.

6:50 p.m.: Almost!

6:48 p.m.: The race a few minutes late, but moments away from the gun. More than 134,000 people are there, a Preakness record, despite terrible weather conditions.

6:46 p.m.: While we wait for the race to start, let’s take a look at the adorable baby Nyquist.

6:42 p.m.: Up-to-the-minute odds:

From the post parade, the track does not look great. It could be an advantage for Exaggerator, who has performed very well on sloppy tracks before.

6:38 p.m.: The riders are up and the singing of “Maryland, My Maryland” has begun. We’re under 10 minutes away from the scheduled start time.

6:33 p.m.: The horses are on the track and saddling up.

6:25 p.m.: Here’s a look at current track conditions. It’s a rough day out there.

5:10 p.m.: The Associated Press has a terrific story on why everyone loves Nyquist, the favorite entering the Preakness on Saturday. It details not only his terrific nature as a horse, but also his unique and incredible talent.

From the AP:

Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux will be aboard Derby runner-up Exaggerator, the 3-1 second choice but a four-time loser to Nyquist. He thought he had him in the San Vicente, but Nyquist came out on top.

“When I tackled him in the San Vicente coming to him twice the speed that he was going, he just jumped into the forward speed with me,” Desormeaux said. “I was like, whoa, who is this guy? So, he’s just very talented.”

5:02 p.m.: It looks like Nyquist’s owner is a big Detroit Red Wings fan.

5:00 p.m.: Here’s a look at the scene at Pimlico Race Course today.

Nyquist could make a bit of history later.

4:50 p.m.: Some tragic news from the track earlier in the day, as two horses died following races. One was euthanized on the track, and another collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack after taking photos in the winner’s circle.

The horse who suffered from the heart attack apparently belonged to a group of owners that includes former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

4:00 p.m.: The obvious question on everyone’s mind is whether Nyquist can continue the dominant start to his career and win the second leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday at the 141st running of the Preakness from Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

Nyquist took home a narrow victory at the Kentucky Derby just two weeks ago to move to 8-0, much to the delight of bettors. The horse he edged out for first, though, is creating quite a buzz himself.

Exaggerator has come in second to Nyquist twice already and entered Saturday second in the betting lines as a +375 underdog with a 15-4 shot at winning.

Here’s a look at the latest odds on all the participating horses, via OddsShark.

The horses likely will have a sloppy track to deal with, with rainy conditions expected all day, according to AccuWeather.com. Highs are expected to be around a cool 56 degrees with cloudy and windy conditions throughout the day.
