Rick Porcello pitched pretty well for the Boston Red Sox on Friday night, but the offense couldn’t score enough runs in a 3-2 road loss to the New York Yankees.

It’s the Yankees’ first win of the season against the Red Sox. They previously were 0-3.

The Red Sox still sit in first place in the American League East division because the second-place Baltimore Orioles’ game against the Oakland Athletics was postponed.

Here’s a recap of Friday’s matchup.

GAME IN A WORD
Unclutch.

The Red Sox were 3 for 12 with runners in scoring position and left 12 runners on base.

IT WAS OVER WHEN…
The Red Sox had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth inning, but David Ortiz and Hanley Ramirez struck out to end the game. Ortiz and Red Sox manager John Farrell were ejected in the ninth inning for arguing balls and strikes.

ON THE BUMP
Porcello stuck out the side in the first inning, but he gave up a leadoff walk to Jacoby Ellsbury, who stole second base and third base before scoring on a Brian McCann double. Porcello gave up another run in the second frame when Starlin Castro scored on a Dustin Ackley single. Castro reached on an infield single to lead off the frame.

Porcello gave up one hit in the third, but he didn’t surrender any runs. New York collected another hit in the fourth but the side was retired before any baserunners could reach second base. Porcello finished his first 1-2-3 inning in the fifth, and he did it again in the sixth frame.

He ran into some trouble in the seventh, though. Aaron Hicks led off the inning with a homer that gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Porcello retired the next three batters to end the frame.

Porcello gave up six hits and three earned runs, while striking out five and walking two over seven innings.

— Tommy Layne started the eighth inning and allowed a leadoff walk to Brett Gardner. He got out of the inning without any damage after Mark Teixeira grounded into a double play and McCann grounded into the third out.

IN THE BATTER’S BOX
— David Ortiz got the Sox on the board first with a two-run homer in the first inning. He finished 1 for 5, though.

— Xander Bogaerts, who scored on Ortiz’s home run, hit a first-inning double and stole third. He was 2 for 5 with a strikeout.

— Hanley Ramirez hit a first-inning single and finished 2 for 5 with two strikeouts.

— Travis Shaw also singled in the first. He went 3 for 4.

— Christian Vazquez was 1 for 3 with a double. Josh Rutledge pinch hit for him in the ninth and reached on an infield single to lead off the frame.

— Dustin Pedroia was 0 for 4 until he singled in the ninth inning, which moved Rutledge to second with zero outs.

— Mookie Betts (0 for 4) was the only Red Sox starter without a hit. Betts did have a walk and a stolen base, to his credit.

TWEET OF THE NIGHT
All smiles for Ortiz.

UP NEXT
The Red Sox and Yankees play the second game of their three-game series Saturday at 1:05 p.m. ET. David Price (Boston) versus Nathan Eovaldi (New York) is the probable pitching matchup.
