It looks as though John Farrell won’t miss any time at the helm of the Red Sox.
The Boston manager was ejected from Friday’s game against the New York Yankees after arguing with home plate umpire Ron Kulpa over a strike-two call to David Ortiz in the ninth inning. Farrell left, but when Ortiz himself was ejected and came out of the dugout at Kulpa after a bad strike-three call in the same at-bat, Farrell went back out to the field to help hold his designated hitter back.
Farrell’s return to the field was a suspendable offense, but ESPN.com’s Scott Lauber reported Monday, citing a source, that the Red Sox skipper won’t receive a ban. Farrell instead will reportedly receive a fine — which likely would have happened anyway just for being ejected — although Major League Baseball doesn’t disclose the amounts of its fines.
Farrell said over the weekend that he felt he needed to step in when the situation escalated, as he didn’t want Ortiz to put his hands on Kulpa. That likely played a factor in MLB’s decision, though an official announcement hasn’t been made.
