Royals’ Mike Moustakas On DL With ACL Tear, Putting Season In Jeopardy

Mike Moustakas’ 2016 season could be over.

The Kansas City Royals announced Thursday that Moustakas has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with an ACL tear in his right knee. No timetable was given for Moustakas’ return, but a torn ACL is nothing to sneeze at, so it’s reasonable to believe the third baseman’s season is in jeopardy.

Moustakas’ injury is the second significant blow to Kansas City this week, as left fielder Alex Gordon fractured his wrist and is expected to miss three to four weeks. Both players were injured on a nasty collision in foul territory along the left field line Sunday.

Moustakas, the second overall pick in 2007 behind David Price, earned his first All-Star selection in 2015. He hit .284 with 22 home runs, 82 RBIs and an .817 OPS in 147 regular-season games for the eventual World Series champion Royals.

Moustakas, who turns 28 in September, began this season by hitting .240 with seven homers, 13 RBIs and an .801 OPS in his first 27 games. He was activated off the 15-day DL last Saturday after recovering from a fracture in his left thumb and had missed the last three games with his knee issue.
