University of Alabama at Birmingham running back Greg Bryant was declared brain dead on Sunday after suffering gun shot wounds in a car on Interstate 95 near West Palm Beach in Florida.

Bryant and a passenger, 25-year-old Maurice Grover, were found shot early Saturday morning. Grover suffered minor injuries. West Palm Beach police spokeswoman Lori Colombino said the shooting of the 21-year-old Bryant is now classified as a homicide. She said detectives are seeking witnesses to the shooting and that anyone with information is asked to call police.

Bryant played for the University of Notre Dame in 2013 and 2014 before being declared academically ineligible before the 2015 season. He transferred to a junior college in Miami and recently had signed a national letter of intent to play for the UAB football team once the program is reinstated in 2017.
