Verne Lundquist, the legendary play-by-play announcer who’s been the voice of “SEC on CBS” since 2000, is stepping down from his lead college football role at CBS Sports after the 2016 season.

Lundquist’s decision was announced Tuesday in a press release. Brad Nessler has been tabbed as Lundquist’s replacement beginning with the 2017 season.

Lundquist, who turns 76 in July, will continue to call college basketball games, the NCAA Tournament and golf for CBS, according to the network. This season will mark Lundquist’s 53rd in television.

Nessler, whose contract with ESPN wasn’t renewed earlier this month, will begin calling certain SEC games this season when CBS Sports broadcasts two SEC football games in a given week. The veteran broadcaster also will do the 2016 Hyundai Sun Bowl and select college basketball games.
