Is Wes Welker Ready To Retire? Ex-Patriots Receiver Weighs His Options

Wes Welker isn’t quite sure what he wants to do.

The 35-year-old wide receiver is coming off a lackluster season with the St. Louis Rams in which he caught just 13 passes for 102 yards in eight games. He hasn’t reached the 1,000-yard receiving mark since the 2012 season.

But pulling the trigger on retirement is easier said than done. So with the NFL regular season a little more than three months away, Welker still hasn’t decided on his future.

“That’s kind of the million-dollar question right now in trying to figuring that out,” Welker said Wednesday on “NFL Total Access” on whether he’s going to retire. “I think I’m weighing my options and really trying to figure out where to go with life next.

“But there are some days I wake up, and I’m like ‘OK, I’m done.’ And other days I wake up, and I’m like, ‘Oh, maybe one more year.’ But I’m trying not to rush into any decision but at the same time know that and prepare myself for not playing.”

Welker once was Tom Brady’s favorite target. Welker totaled at least 111 catches and 1,165 yards in five of his six seasons with the New England Patriots, earning five Pro Bowl selections and leading the NFL in receptions three times.

But Welker’s career hasn’t been the same since he left New England and signed with the Denver Broncos before the 2013 season. Injuries have been an issue, and Welker admitted Wednesday that his history of concussions will be considered when deciding whether to call it quits.

“They definitely factor in,” Welker, who has been with five different teams in his 12-year career, told NFL Network. “Especially when you start having kids and having your family and everything. A lot of those things come into play, and you start thinking about the future down the road.”

Whenever Welker walks away, he certainly can do so knowing he left it all on the field.
