2016 MLB Draft Order: Phillies Pick No. 1; Red Sox Making Two Picks Thursday

by

Jun 9, 2016

There are only a handful of games on the Major League Baseball slate for Thursday, but it’s an important day for all of baseball’s 30 clubs.

Thursday is the first day of the 2016 MLB Draft, with a total of 77 picks being made between theĀ first and second rounds and two lottery rounds known as the Competitive Balance Lottery.

The first round technically has 32 selections, with teams getting compensation picks for losing free agents. Because of that, the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals both have three first-round picks. The Competitive Balance Lottery picks are made after the first and second rounds. Those picks are for small-market, small-revenue teams and can be traded, as was the case last August when the Miami Marlins sent their lottery pick to the Atlanta Braves as part of a wild three-team trade that also included the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The full draft order for Thursday night’s picks can be found below.
