UPDATE (7:01 p.m. ET): The hamstring strain Boston Red Sox left fielder Chris Young suffered Thursday will land him on the disabled list, Red Sox manager John Farrell announced.
“From what you saw on the field, we’re hopeful it’s not as severe,” Farrell said after his team defeated the Chicago White Sox 8-7 in 10 innings. “He felt a little popping sensation when he was rounding first base, so he’s going on the disabled list. … This is significant enough that we can make the DL call right now.”
Farrell did not announce a corresponding roster move, but it surely will be for an additional outfielder. The Red Sox have just four on their 25-man roster with Young, Brock Holt and Blake Swihart now all on the DL, and first/third baseman Travis Shaw even was forced to play three inning in left field during Thursday’s game.
“Chris Young, once he pulled his hamstring right there, that was a huge letdown for us in the dugout,” shortstop Xander Bogaerts said. “We all kind of felt bad right away, because we just saw how bad it potentially could be, and he’s been a huge part of the success we’ve been having so far, especially since he’s been playing a lot regularly since Swihart and Holt are injured also.
“Huge blow, but hopefully he’s back soon.”
ORIGINAL STORY: BOSTON — The injury bug bit the Red Sox yet again Thursday.
During the second inning of a game against the Chicago White Sox, left fielder Chris Young roped a base hit off the Green Monster but came up lame as he took a hard turn around first base.

Young limped back to the bag, clutched his right leg as he slumped to the ground and had to be carried off the field by team personnel. Ryan LaMarre replaced him on the basepaths.
Young was diagnosed with a right hamstring strain, according to the team.
The Red Sox already were down two outfielders entering Thursday’s game, as Brock Holt (concussion) and Blake Swihart (ankle) both are on the disabled list.
