The best pitcher in Major League Baseball is on his way to the disabled list, and it’s unsure how long he’ll be there.

The Los Angeles Dodgers plan to place Clayton Kershaw on the 15-day DL with a back injury. The left-hander received an epidural in his lower back, and the Dodgers are hopeful he’ll be able to return after the All-Star break, but manager Dave Roberts isn’t sure if Kershaw will be able to go when the 15-day stint is done.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner is in the middle of another fantastic season and appeared to be the front-runner to start the All-Star Game for the National League. Kershaw is 11-2 this season with a league-leading 1.79 ERA, striking out 145 batters in just 121 innings.

Kershaw was coming off one of the worst starts of his season, allowing four runs on nine hits with two walks in just six innings while striking out just four in a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
