It turns out David Ortiz already played his final game at Globe Life Park.
The retiring designated hitter is out of the Boston Red Sox’s lineup Sunday for the final game of their series against the Texas Rangers. Ortiz hasn’t been having a great time in Arlington so far, going just 1-for-7, and trainers recommended he take a day off, per The Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham.
Hanley Ramirez will bat out of Ortiz’s usual cleanup spot, while Bryce Brentz will DH and bat sixth. Ryan LaMarre will make his first start with the Red Sox, batting ninth and playing left field.
Sandy Leon also is starting behind the plate in place of Christian Vazquez and batting eighth. He’ll be catching for Clay Buchholz, who has a lot at stake Sunday. The Red Sox didn’t make a bullpen move, so manager John Farrell said they’ll be relying on Buchholz to pitch deep into the game, per Abraham.
