The 2016 UEFA European Championship begins Friday when tournament host France takes on Romania in the first game of Group A.

It begins a month-long stretch of world-class soccer played by many of the sport’s best players in one of the most historic football nations on Earth.

Spain is the two-time defending European champion, but reigning World Cup champion Germany is the favorite entering the tournament. Germany has reached the semifinals or further in five straight Euro and World Cup tournaments since 2006.
