Jason Pierre-Paul is trying to make sure others don’t make the same (very dumb) mistake he did.

The New York Giants defensive end made headlines for all the wrong reasons last summer when he nearly blew off his hand while playing with fireworks on the Fourth of July. While his hand was salvaged, Pierre-Paul lost parts of three fingers and almost saw his NFL career go up in smoke.

With the Fourth upon us, JPP teamed up with CPSC for a fireworks safety PSA that aired Wednesday morning on “Good Morning America.”

Pierre-Paul will spend America’s birthday outside the country, according to ESPN.com.
