The Boston Red Sox haven’t been playing the best baseball recently, but that hasn’t hurt several players’ chances in the 2016 American League All-Star voting.
Major League Baseball released its fifth and final voting update Monday for the 2016 All-Star Game, and four Red Sox currently are in line to start at the Midsummer Classic on July 12: designated hitter David Ortiz, shortstop Xander Bogaerts and outfielders Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mookie Betts.
Ortiz (3.4 million votes) and Bogaerts (2.8 million votes) still hold massive leads at their respective positions, while Bradley (2.2 million votes) and Betts (1.9 million votes) currently comprise two thirds of the AL’s starting outfield along with voting leader Mike Trout (2.9 million votes).
Betts has made the biggest surge in voting results, as he was as low as fifth in earlier updates. He held just a 30,000-vote lead over Baltimore Orioles slugger Mark Trumbo as of June 21Â but now leads the Kansas City Royals’ Lorenzo Cain, who has jumped up to fourth, by nearly 100,000 votes.
Betts has tallied nine hits in his last five games to raise his batting average to .293. He led all AL outfielders as of Monday with 65 runs scored.
