Isaiah Thomas has been doing his best to lure Kevin Durant to the Boston Celtics. Will Marcus Smart follow his teammate’s lead?
?If I get his number,? Smart said with a smile Tuesday while speaking with reporters at his summer basketball camp at Red Auerbach Court at Brandeis University.
Thomas or someone else might want to relay that information to Smart, as landing Durant would be huge for the Celtics as they look to make the jump from a playoff team to a serious NBA title contender. Durant, who’s set to become an unrestricted free agent Friday, already has a meeting scheduled with Boston, but his current team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, are considered the heavy favorites to re-sign the seven-time All-Star.
Still, it doesn’t hurt to go all-in.
?Oh, no doubt. I think any team would love to see Durant and those type of caliber players on their team,? Smart told reporters. ?But we?re not the ones that make that call, so we just kind of sit back and wait. And whatever decisions that the front office makes, we?re ready to run with it.?
Durant reportedly has meetings scheduled with the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat and Los Angeles Clippers in addition to the Celtics and Thunder. That means there’s some steep competition for the former MVP’s services, and every little phone call counts.
Secure those digits, Marcus.
