The New England Patriots lost valuable depth at tight end Wednesday during the second day of mandatory minicamp.
Michael Williams suffered a torn ACLÂ in his left knee during practice, a team source told The Boston Globe’s Jim McBride on Thursday. McBride reported Williams likely will be placed on injured reserve for the injury that will almost certainly end the tight end’s 2016 season before it began.
The Patriots acquired Williams last August in a trade with the Detroit Lions for a 2017 seventh-round draft pick. Williams caught three passes for 26 yards while mostly serving in a blocking capacity in 15 games and nine starts last season. He entered the offseason third on the Patriots’ depth chart behind Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett. The Patriots also have Clay Harbor, A.J. Derby, Bryce Williams and Steven Scheu at the position.
