Ryan Fitzpatrick and the New York Jets remain unable to see eye to eye on a deal that would keep the veteran quarterback in East Rutherford.
Gary Myers of the New York Daily News reported Wednesday night that Fitzpatrick is willing to re-sign with the Jets on a one-year, $12 million contract.
The team, however, is not interested in that proposal. It instead would prefer to sign Fitzpatrick to a three-year deal that would pay the 33-year-old $12 million this season but significantly less in 2017 and 2018, according to multiple reports.
“At this point,” Myers wrote, “the Jets are being stubborn and have not indicated they are willing to lock up Fitz for just one year, even if they are willing to pay him starter’s money for just one year and are lowballing him in the second and third year.”
Manish Mehta, also of the Daily News, reported the same Thursday morning.
Fitzpatrick set a Jets franchise record for touchdown passes last season with 31. If he and the team can’t reach an agreement on a new deal, Geno Smith likely slides to the top of New York’s quarterback depth chart.
