Rory McIlroy is no longer concerned about going to Brazil, and he certainly has no qualms about going to Mexico.
The former No. 1 golfer in the world weighed in on the decision to move the World Golf Championships from Donald Trump’s Doral resort to Mexico. In the process, McIlroy made a pretty funny quip about Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, and his views on the United States’ southern neighbor.
Trump has insisted throughout his campaign that he’s going to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, something McIlroy — a Northern Ireland native — apparently knows all about.
“It’s quite ironic that we’re going to Mexico after being at Doral, but we’ll just jump over the wall,” McIlroy told reporters Wednesday at a news conference for the upcoming Memorial tournament.
“I think it’s a good move, it really is,” McIlroy added.
McIlroy also revealed his intentions to play at the Olympics this summer in Brazil, despite concerns over the Zika virus. McIlroy last month wouldn’t commit to going, but he said Wednesday he’s done the proper research and doesn’t see the threat being big enough to stop him from attending.
“I feel like the advice I’ve sought out over the past 10 days has put my mind at ease and makes me more comfortable going down there knowing that, even if I do contract Zika, it’s not the end of the world,” he said, per Yahoo! Sports. “It takes six months to pass through your system, and you’re fine.”
“You can get tested for it, and it’s either a yes or a no you’ve had it,” he added. “It’s a virus. It works its way out of your system, and you become immune to it.”
