Brad Keselowski: ‘Only So Many Hits’ Before NASCAR Driver Gets Killed

Brad Keselowski has taken a lot of hard hits in his NASCAR career, and he says there’s only so much more he can take.

Keselowski was lucky to escape serious injury after crashing head-on into a wall at Watkins Glen International during a testing session Tuesday. The 32-year-old acknowledged Friday at Pocono Raceway that, thanks to improved safety features, he was able to continue testing later that day.

But that doesn’t mean he’s always comfortable behind the wheel of his No. 2 Miller Lite Ford Fusion.

“There’s only so many of those hits you’re gonna take before someone gets killed,” Keselowski said, via FOXSports.com. “It’s just the way it is. I know that. It’s not something I’m comfortable with, but I think as a sport there’s a lot of different ways to look at it. At the end of the day, I am still standing here. Odds are that if 100 people take that hit, one or two are not gonna be standing here anymore.”

Keselowski tweeted a video from the drivers’ seat, as well as a picture of the car’s exterior after of the crash, which appeared to be caused by brake failure.

This was far from the first big hit for Keselowski. In 2011, Keselowski crashed into a concrete barrier while testing at Road Atlanta. The Team Penske driver suffered a broken ankle, among other injuries.

He’s therefore in perfect position to address what more needs to be done for driver safety.

“I think we’ve seen that a couple times over the last few years where the steering wheel comes back up in your face and can do a lot of damage to your helmet and your head, etc,” he told FOXSports.com.

But even with the recent crash, Keselowski’s mind was set on returning to Watkins Glen.

It just goes to show that even with the safety improvements NASCAR has made to its cars, crashes like this can happen and jeopardize the life of a driver.
