Chris Sale returned to the mound Thursday night for the Chicago White Sox and, unsurprisingly, still was a very good pitcher.
Controversy has surrounded the 27-year-old ace. The subject of several trade rumors and many teams’ desires, Sale was suspended for cutting up throwback jerseys he didn’t want to wear while pitching.
But all was hunky-dory when Sale squared off against the crosstown rival Chicago Cubs. Sale took the loss but not because he was bad. He allowed just two earned runs over six innings of work in the White Sox’s 3-1 loss but was outdueled by Cubs pitcher John Lackey, who earned his first win since June 8 after allowing only one earned run in the first inning.
Sale even found his way at the plate, recording his second career hit on this weird play.

The outing was Sale’s last start before Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline. Only time will tell if it was his last start with the White Sox.
