The top-selling jersey of 2016 technically could become a throwback the minute the season ends.
David Ortiz, who’s in the midst of his farewell tour, represented the most popular player jersey for the first half of the 2016 Major League Baseball season, according to ESPN’s Darren Rovell.
The list of top-selling jerseys tweeted Monday by Rovell was compiled based on Majestic jersey sales from MLBShop.com between Jan. 1 and the 2016 All-Star Game, which is scheduled to be played Tuesday night at Petco Park in San Diego.
Kris Bryant, Clayton Kershaw, Anthony Rizzo and Mike Trout round out the top five. The next-highest-selling Boston Red Sox jersey on the list belongs to Dustin Pedroia, who checks in at No. 20.
Ortiz is having a monster final season after announcing last November his plan to retire following the 2016 campaign. And clearly, his popularity — not just in Boston, but across the league — remains at an all-time high.
