Longtime NFL head coach Dennis Green died Friday morning at age 67.
Green’s death was the result of cardiac arrest, a friend of the coach’s confirmed to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Green spent 10 seasons as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, leading them to the playoffs in eight of them and reaching two NFC Championship Games. He coached the 1998 Vikings team that went 15-1 and boasted what at the time was the highest-scoring offense in NFL history before being upset by the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC title game.
Green left Minnesota in 2001 and took three years off from coaching before returning with the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals went just 16-32 in his three seasons at the helm, which were highlighted by his legendary “They are who we thought they were” rant after a 2006 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Green also held head-coaching jobs at Stanford and Northwestern and with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the now-defunct United Football League.
