Did Draymond Green’s Text Messages Help Lure Kevin Durant To Warriors?

Draymond Green’s fingers received a workout from the moment NBA free agency began July 1 until the moment Kevin Durant announced July 4 that he’d sign with the Golden State Warriors.

Green recently said in an exclusive DraftKings interview that he sent a whole bunch of text messages to Durant once the former Oklahoma City Thunder star hit the open market. The two had been friends, but Green really wanted them to become NBA teammates.

“I had sent out so many texts to him over those last three days, I’m not sure the exact amount of number,” Green said. “I can’t even give you a ballpark, I just know it was probably too many. But it worked, so I’m all right with that.”

Green, who’s entering his fifth season with the Warriors, was careful to clarify that his recruitment of Durant didn’t began until the official start of free agency. There were rumblings that some Thunder players were upset about Durant talking to Green during the NBA playoffs, but Green insists the two didn’t have much contact throughout their teams’ Western Conference finals series.

Nevertheless, Green’s aggressiveness starting July 1 clearly worked, even if it wasn’t the main motivating factor in Durant signing with Golden State.
