Drew Pomeranz Eyes New Number, Knows Two That Are Off-Limits In Boston

Drew Pomeranz wore No. 13 with the San Diego Padres, but he’ll need a new digit now that he has been traded to Boston. That’s because the Red Sox’s No. 13 belongs to Hanley Ramirez, and star players aren’t in the habit of changing jerseys.

So what should Pomeranz do? Brett Anderson, his former Oakland A’s teammate, had a not-so-helpful (and likely tongue-in-cheek) suggestion, but luckily, Pomeranz already knows his place in Boston and isn’t about to swipe David Ortiz’s number.

Another target could be No. 47, which Pomeranz wore in 2011, when he broke into the major leagues with the Colorado Rockies. Travis Shaw currently wears that number in Boston, but considering Pomeranz makes almost three times what the slugging third baseman does ($1.35 million to $515,000), perhaps a deal could be struck.

Either way, Pomeranz is just happy to be in Boston.

He’s also thankful for his short time in San Diego, which featured his first All-Star Game appearance.
