Hear Katy Perry’s ‘Rise,’ NBC’s 2016 Rio Olympics Anthem Of Choice

Katy Perry might unite the world with her latest single if the Olympics don’t do it first.

The pop singer released “Rise” on Thursday, ensuring she’ll return from a two-year absence from the music market with a bang.

Why’s that?

Because NBC has chosen “Rise” as its official anthem for its coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Viewers in the United States will hear a lot of this song in the coming weeks.

The track mixes a haunting sound with uplifting lyrics. It probably will reflect the thrill of victory and agony of defeat that athletes will feel next month in Brazil.

“This is a song that’s been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface,” Perry said in a statement, according to Time.com. “I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite.

“I know that together we can rise above the fear — in our country and around the world. I can’t think of a better example than the Olympic athletes, as they gather in Rio with their strength and fearlessness, to remind us how we ALL can come together, with the resolve to be the best we can be. I hope this song can inspire us to heal, unite and rise together. I am honored that NBC Olympics has chosen to use it as an anthem before and during the Rio Games.”
