UPDATE (3:57 p.m.): It looks as though surgery is inevitable for Matt Harvey.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson addressed the media Thursday and told them as much, saying Harvey has symptoms consistent with thoracic outlet syndrome, per Newsday’s Marc Carig.

Surgery would come with a four-month rehab, and there is a non-surgical option. Harvey hasn’t decided which route he will take.

Original story: Not only has Matt Harvey not been playing like an All-Star this season, but now he’ll be spending his All-Star break on the disabled list.

The New York Mets announced Wednesday that their starter went to the 15-day DL with right shoulder discomfort. The team called up right-hander Seth Lugo from Triple-A Las Vegas as a result.

Dr. Robert Thompson specializes in thoracic outlet syndrome, which isn’t a great sign for Harvey. The right-hander didn’t complain of any pain after Monday’s outing against the Miami Marlins, but he did allow six runs (five earned) on 11 hits over just 3 2/3 innings.

Harvey currently is sporting a 4-10 record to go with a 4.86 ERA and 1.47 WHIP, which all are career highs. His 10 losses also are the most among National League starters.
