Dean Ambrose technically still is the WWE champion, but only after a controversial ending to his title match with former Shield partner Seth Rollins on “Monday Night Raw.”
The match finished after a “Superplex,” but both men had their shoulders on the mat, resulting in a draw. That meant Ambrose, who entered the night as the champion, walked out of Providence’s Dunkin’ Donuts Center with the belt around his waist.
Fans without the WWE Network might not know that, though, because the final decision wasn’t made until Raw went off the air. New Raw commissioner Stephanie McMahon had Rollins declared the champion at the end of the show, but after some more arguing on the WWE Network between McMahon and her brother, SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon, the result was changed to a draw.
Ambrose, Rollins and Roman Reigns will face off in a Triple Threat Match at Sunday’s “Battleground” pay-per-view, but not before they learn where they’re picked in the Smackdown-Raw draft live on Tuesday’s SmackDown at Worcester’s DCU Center.
The other big news of the night surrounded the return of two stars, Daniel Bryan and Mick Foley, who were named the SmackDown and Raw general managers, respectively.
