Plenty of people and Major League Baseball teams will pay homage to Vin Scully in the 67th and final year of his legendary career as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ play-by-play announcer, but Yasiel Puig just set the bar pretty high.
The Dodgers right fielder rocked some awesome Scully-themed cleats Sunday against the Diamondbacks in Arizona, featuring the play-by-play announcer’s face and an abbreviation of his opening line, “It’s time for Dodger baseball.”
Puig has worn two other pairs of customized shoes this season — an American flag-themed pair for the Fourth of July and a Cuban-flag themed pair — and all were designed by L.A. artist Vincent Vazquez, per ESPN.com’s Doug Padilla.
“I’m using a different pair of shoes every (time), and the guy who designs them surprises me with something different,” Puig said Sunday through a translator. “(Sunday), he surprised me with these. I think it’s good that we should try to ‘Win for Vin’ during his last year.”
It also says a lot about Scully that Puig thinks so highly of him, even though he didn’t know about the iconic voice until he moved to L.A. four years ago.
“I play baseball and I like the way he narrates,” Puig said, per Padilla. “And 67 years of work, he deserves his respect. If it’s not ‘Win for Vin,’ it’s win for the city of Los Angeles and for ourselves.”
