UPDATE (11:20 p.m. ET): The Boston Red Sox are holding their breath on Andrew Benintendi.

Benintendi will undergo an MRI on Thursday morning to evaluate a left knee sprain he suffered on the basepaths, manager John Farrell announced after Boston’s extra-innings loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

“He changed directions on the baserunning play and unfortunately felt the left knee grab him,” Farrell told reporters, as aired on NESN’s “Extra Innings LIVE.” “So to what extent the injury is, we’ll know more by game time (Thursday).”

UPDATE (9:45 p.m.): Andrew Benintendi has a left knee sprain and will be further evaluated Thursday, the Red Sox have announced.

ORIGINAL STORY: It appears the injury bug has bitten in left field once again.

Boston Red Sox left fielder Andrew Benintendi suffered a painful-looking injury in the sixth inning of Wednesday night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.

Dustin Pedroia hit a ground ball to Rays shortstop Matt Duffy with runners on second and third, and Benintendi, stationed at second, got caught in no-man’s land. As he tried to return to second base, the 22-year-old rookie took an awkward step that caused his left leg to bend in a very uncomfortable direction.
