David Ortiz Describes Losing Feeling In Leg After Fouling Pitch Off Shin

When the Boston Red Sox played the New York Yankees on Aug. 10, there was a moment when everyone at Fenway Park believed David Ortiz’s career might be over.

The Red Sox designated hitter fell to the ground in what looked like serious pain in the ninth inning after fouling a 99-mph Dellin Betances fastball off his shin. Ortiz needed to be helped off the field, and the first worry was that his shin was broken.

But not only did the X-rays come back negative for Ortiz, but he was back in Boston’s lineup the very next day. Big Papi recently explained to NESN’s Tom Caron that because he had fouled a ball off the same spot on his shin the previous night, he lost feeling in his leg when he was hit again, leading even Ortiz to believe the injury was bad.

You can hear more from Ortiz in the video above.
