Derrick Rose’s optimism for the upcoming NBA season remains in the stratosphere’s dizzying heights.
The New York Knicks point guard recently told The Vertical’s Nick DePaula that he expects his team to (compete to) win every game in 2016-17.
“It’s a new start,” Rose told The Vertical. “I feel rejuvenated, and when you put all that together, when I step on the floor, I really don’t know what to expect. What I’m doing right now is just preparing myself for something big. I think we have a chance to win every game, and in the league, that’s rare.”
The Chicago Bulls traded Rose to the Knicks in late June and added Joakim Noah shortly thereafter. The two former Bulls have come to a roster that already included Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis. But the Knicks lost 50 games last season.
Rose has said this offseason that he considers the Knicks to be one of the NBA’s superteams, alongside the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavilers. We probably shouldn’t interpret Rose’s comments literally, but he clearly has the highest of hopes for the next chapter in his career.
Most NBA observers predict the reloaded Knicks will compete for a playoff spot in the Easter Conference. But few of them would dare agree with Rose’s expectations for a (potentially) undefeated season and supersteam status.
Rose’ excitement likely won’t subside anytime soon. After all, ’tis the season for wildly unchecked optimism.
